“Wentworth Countryside Walk, Rotherham (South Yorkshire)”

I say this a lot, but Wentworth is probably one of the most lovely places I’ve ever been to. If you were to ask someone to describe a typical English village, I’m pretty sure that they would come up with something very similar to this small town on the outskirts of Rotherham. The Wentworth Countryside Walk followed one of Rotherham Council’s Doorstep Walks (here) and this was one of the first we did. It was fantastic to explore the glorious countryside on a sunny day...

“A Walk for Health: Thrybergh Country Park, Rotherham (South Yorkshire)”

Thrybergh Country Park is a great place to go if you fancy a walk but haven’t got a lot of time. One lap is about 1 mile (and you can keep track of your progress via the ‘Steps for Health’ waymarks). This is recommended as one of the Rotherham Walks for Health (see here) and is easy access. One thing I would point out – at the moment there is a diversion in the last section of the walk due to the bad weather...

“Wickersley Walk: Wickersley Wood, Rotherham (South Yorkshire)”

This Wickersley walk is one of Rotherham Council’s ‘Doorstep Walks’ and is around 2 miles long. It is our local walk, so could be termed an old classic – it’s our go to for evenings after work or when we want to get out but don’t have much time. The Rotherham Walks database has been updated. For a town which isn’t well known for it’s countryside and woodlands there are a wide variety of walks which range from as little as a quarter of a mile, to a heartier 5 miles.

Rotherham is a big town which is well spread out but we’ve got all the boroughs covered with a mini walk for health in pretty much every area, as well as woodland and countryside walks in most of the outlying villages.

These walks will take you past landmarks such as The Chapel on The Bridge, Clifton Park, Roche Abbey, The Needle’s Eye and more.

Walks in South Yorkshire

South Yorkshire is a Metropolitan County which includes the boroughs of Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham, and Sheffield which is the region’s only city. Despite its industrial and mining history, the county is surrounded by lovely countryside. The region includes the Peak District National Forest, the West Pennine Moors and borders on Sherwood Forest. The river Don runs through the county and there are various canals and reservoirs. This all leads to good opportunities for a casual rambles and walks in South Yorkshire!
